Pregnancy is an exciting time! Your body is going through a lot of changes, some that are enjoyable (the baby bump!) and some not so much (morning sickness).

Pregnancy and Your Oral Health

You clearly see evidence of both, but there is another change that is not as obvious, but just as significant – your oral health. Your body’s fluctuating hormone levels are responsible for a lot of changes in your body, including your dental health. For this reason, American Dental Association recommends that you carry on with routine dental treatments throughout your pregnancy.

Your oral health has a direct bearing on your baby’s oral health, so this isn’t just about you. Several common conditions can occur during pregnancy:

  • Gum disease – You may hear this referred to as pregnancy gingivitis because it occurs so frequently during pregnancy. Your best defense is conscientious brushing and flossing, maintaining a nutritious diet, and routine visits to your dentist for checkups.
  • Enamel erosion – As you may unfortunately know, morning sickness is a major problem for some women. Your nausea produces more acid in your mouth that erodes dental enamel, so remember to rinse with mouthwash to keep it under control.
  • Dry mouth – This is another common problem that puts your oral health at risk. Chronic dry mouth puts you at higher risk for decay and gum disease, so remember to hydrate and chew sugarless gum to stimulate saliva flow.
